Our Story
Lutra Lutra is an Edmonton based, four-piece alternative rock band. Composed of siblings Garreth (guitar, vocals) and Katrina Burrows (keys, vocals), Will Smith (bass), and Denis Frigon (drums); they pride themselves on creating rhythmically interesting rock music. By making music the way they hear it, Lutra Lutra creates a weaving web of sound with funky bass lines, melodic keys, intricate drumming and guitar as gritty as a 5 o’clock shadow. Over this rich tapestry of sound sits sassy and sophisticated lyrics delivered with raw passion and juxtaposed by haunting female harmonies. Lutra Lutra will make you move, groove and think.
Originally an acoustic duo of siblings from Red Deer named Katasaurus Wrecks, Garreth (guitar, vocals) and Katrina Burrows (violin, vocals) supplemented their sound with hand drums and fellow Red Deer native and MacEwan graduate Will Smith (bass). Upon moving to Edmonton, MacEwan graduate Denis Frigon (drums) came on board. Katrina shifted to keys from a classical piano training background, and the group began creating a more distinct, unique sound.
Playing regularly at local bars as a headliner and local festivals such as Muttstock and the Heart of the City Music Festival, has lead to them gathering larger exposure and performing to a greater audience base. Their 9-date Western Canada tour, spanning from Edmonton to Vancouver, established their musical presence, drawing attention to their unique sound as a promising up and coming Alberta based band in the Canadian music scene. Upon completion of their six song EP, Lutra Lutra played a CD release show on Canada Day to a sold out house at Filthy McNasty’s. Having their first EP released in July 2016 debut at #3 on the CJSR (Edmonton) charts and #19 on CFBX (Kamloops), the group has finished recording their first LP due to release in November 2018.
