Lutra Lutra is a musical group from Edmonton, Alberta composed of siblings Garreth and Katrina Burrows, Cody Willets, Denis Frigon and Will Smith. At its inception, the band began as a brother/sister acoustic duo supplemented with hand drums and Will Smith on bass. Within a month, drums and piano were added to enhance and round out their sound. Originally billed as Katasaurus Wrecks, a name that was designed to display the distinct sense of humor of the individuals involved, the group eagerly accepted any show that was offered. After a year highlighted by playing Brixx bar and grill multiple times, selling out Cha Island and playing at Edmonton’s newly elected Mayor Don Iveson’s volunteer appreciation party, the group took another step towards creating a viable and more refined musical product.
Spurred by the desire to pursue music as a career, personnel changes were made within the band. Exchanging the former drummer and piano player for guitarist Cody Willets and drummer Denis Frigon, while shifting the classically trained Katrina to piano/keyboard, the group took their product to another level both esthetically and musically. With new musicians came a new sound and new opportunity. The band focused on finishing their DIY recordings for a 5 song EP to release to the public. However, as the recordings progressed, the newly formed group began to find a distinct sound and groove, which seemed like a separate entity from Katasaurus Wrecks. New songs emerged with more edge, more attitude and a renewed tenacity.
The transition was finalized by a name change. Lutra Lutra, which is the scientific classification of the Eurasian river otter, emerged from Katrina’s background in biological sciences and work with otters at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.
Lutra Lutra has just completed a 6 -track EP recorded at Sound Extractor in Edmonton, Alberta. Following shows in April and May the band will be releasing the self-titled EP for the public at the beginning of June. They’ve made sure that the quality of the product was worth the wait.
